How to Make the Best Use of WordPress Tags

Updated: Jun 9, 2020

Tag is one of the predefined categories in WordPress. Users can add tags to their WordPress posts along with categories. However, while a category may cover a broad range of topics, tags are smaller in range and focused to exact topics. Think of them as keywords used for topics discussed in a particular post. Tags are a way of grouping WordPress posts and pages. They are usually more specific than categories but are entirely optional. Although you can easily decide not to use tags in your posts, most people in WordPress do tag their posts with at least one word which is the most relevant to the article they have been writing. You shouldn't tag a page for the sake of traffic, tagging a page means grouping posts by that particular tag could be of useful for the visitor of your site.

The setback with tags is that most of the bloggers, who have recently started to write blogs, they don’t use it right. Some of the bloggers write the tags anywhere in their blogs just to fill some empty spots in the page or just for their own satisfaction. The tags should be very specific adding unnecessary staff doesn’t do the job for tags. The number of hashtags for each post should be around 2 or 3 not more than, because having two or three useful hashtags are better than having five to six unnecessary hashtags. WordPress comes with every kind of tools you need to keep your posts prepared, most particularly categories and tags. Let’s focus now a while on WordPress tags. Hope you have got some information about tags but if not don't worry we are going to explore some more about it which are as follows.

How do tags work?

Using the # tag normally shows that you want to take part in a bigger, in progress conversation for example, a conference (# covid-19) or a popular subject on social media (# socialmedia). Using the @tag signifies to someone, that you're talking about, and asking for attention, and you would like the person should respond to you. For the proper function of the # tag it is very important that you do not include any space in your # tag.

Differences between TAGS and HASHTAGS?

Hashtags are branding a topic. When you use a hashtag, you are looking to attach whatever you are talking about to that topic. A tag typically applies to a person. This is when you are trying to get the attention of someone who might find what you are talking about important.

What is a Hashtag example?

A hashtag is simply a keyword phrase, spelled out without spaces, with a pound sign (#) in front of it. For example, # Lovers and # MusicLovers are both hashtags. You can place these hashtags anywhere in your social media posts before or after the message text, or anywhere in between.

So now lets learn some more about Tags and it is uses, which are as below

Limit for Tags

In general honestly speaking there is no such limit for tag in post you can use as much as you want, but in most cases for showing the proper use you don’t need more than 5 to 10 tags on a post unless you can justify it. We don't use Tags to show our audience that we have many Tags; we use it reading purposes to help the readers or visitors in the site read more and explore more in the site. You should use tags that are up to three words long. Tags should also be the keywords related to your blog post because they will help search engines in finding your content fast and easily.

Don’t Be Extremely Particular

When it is the time to choose a good name for your tag, be specific so that it makes sense. If you list the names of some popular personalities, by using their complete names definitely makes sense. But if you tag your photos that you took while you were traveling in France, don’t use tags like “Me on a sunny day near the beach”. In its place, you can use something specific and simple like "SunnyDay" or "France".

Avoid Identical Tags

Avoid identical tags means don't use tags which are the same meaning but different words no need only one is enough, But in some cases it possible that people may don't know the meaning of the words and they use the same tag two or three times in different forms. We suggest you to always search for the meaning of the word before you use it because some time your audience will not really appreciate it by click on two different phrases and getting to the same place. And this can affect your audience experience towards your post or blog. Tag has no any connection with SEO, over crowded Tags even Google doesn't really appreciate.

Avoid Special Characters

Tags only work with the (Pound # sign). No any special characters will work like hashtag on any of the social media platforms. Twitter and some other few social media platforms like YouTube recognizes the (Pound # sign) and then converts the hashtag into a clickable link, by clicking on it the page will take you toward the subject which the hashtag is about. Numbers are allowed in hashtags. But some how, spaces and special characters, like $ or %, are not allowed in hashtag. You can only tag your own posts; more than 30 tags in comment will not let you to send it.

Tags in Groups

Tags are very useful when we present it in the form of groups in category wise because this is the proper manner it should to be presented. Most of the sites mix up tags that should in fact to be separated in groups. Tags have also many other useful uses in sites than just normal tagging. You can also display your tags grouped by language or topic wise.
